Calling for transparent, responsible AI, days after ChatGPT's launch

On December 9, 2022, days after ChatGPT's public launch, I was the opening panelist for "The Global Race for Technological Superiority: Shifting Paradigms in the Age of AI and Cybersecurity" at the 6th TRT World Forum in Istanbul. The moderator opened the session by asking me to set the stage on artificial intelligence.

"...artificial intelligence that takes out of the hands of people decision making and automates it in a way that we hope is beneficial to all of us. But if you talk to people who are really expert in artificial intelligence, they'll often say that even they don't fully understand how it works, and that's where we need to be very concerned... In AI we trust, and yet we're not quite sure how it fully works. But we are sure that there are instances in which it embeds bias, in which it may not be as reliable as we think it is. So as we look to the now and into the future, we have to add more transparency. The phrase is responsible AI. We have to know that the data it's looking at is inclusive, so that the decisions it makes are not biased, are not exclusive."

Later in the session, I called the AI arms race worrisome and pointed to the 1983 Stanislav Petrov early warning incident to argue for keeping humans in the loop.

Those concerns now sit at the center of AI governance. Public trust is the test: 52% of US adults say the increased use of AI in daily life makes them more concerned than excited, up from 37% in 2021 (Pew Research Center, June 2026 survey).
